Flying Cars? Meet Archer and Joby – The Race for the Future of Travel
A New Way to Travel
Imagine calling a ride on your phone, but instead of a car pulling up, a small electric aircraft quietly lifts off and flies you across town. That’s the promise of eVTOLs (electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft). They work a lot like drones, but big enough to carry people.
Why does this matter?
No traffic jams – they can fly over crowded roads.
Cleaner air – they run on electricity, not gasoline.
Quiet flights – much quieter than helicopters.
This is the type of future that two companies, Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation are racing to build.
Who is Joby Aviation?
Joby is one of the biggest names in this new industry. Their aircraft can carry four people and a pilot, fly about 150 miles, and go as fast as a car on the highway (around 200 mph).
Joby wants to launch an air taxi service like Uber in the sky by the middle of this decade.
Who is Archer Aviation?
Archer is another exciting competitor. Their aircraft, called the Midnight, is designed for shorter trips (20–50 miles). For example, instead of spending an hour in traffic from downtown Manhattan to JFK airport, Archer hopes to fly you there in 10 minutes.
They are working closely with United Airlines, which plans to use their aircraft for airport shuttles.
Why This is a Big Deal
Both Joby and Archer are showing us what the future of travel could look like. Some people compare this to the early days of electric cars, nobody believed it would take off, but look at Tesla now.
Experts say the air taxi industry could become a trillion-dollar market by 2040. That means new jobs, new businesses, and maybe even a totally new way for us to move around.
Why It Matters to You
Even if you never plan to ride one, this technology could:
Create new jobs in engineering, maintenance, and flight operations.
Help cities reduce traffic and pollution.
Open doors for young people interested in science, technology, and aviation careers.
Closing
Right now, Archer and Joby are racing to see who will be the first to launch a safe, affordable air taxi service. It might sound like science fiction, but just like smartphones and electric cars, it could soon be part of everyday life.
At FortiFi’s Flagship newsletter, we keep an eye on big changes like this—because the world is moving fast and knowing what’s next helps us all stay ready.
